Join metalsmiths Jennifer Mineer and Tina Rath in Oakland for a Saturday metal casting workshop! Over the course of the day, we will learn to cast pewter objects and silver rings into cuttlebone. Cuttlebone is desirable for making jewelry because it is easy to access and use, and because it leaves a distinct woodgrain-like pattern in the cast pieces.
In this class, we will focus on techniques and strategies for carving and casting into the cuttlefish bone, specifically by melting and pouring metal to make first a pewter object (or two) and then after we warm up, we will make a sterling silver ring.
Some finishing and polishing techniques will be covered.
All materials and tools provided. Please wear closed-toed shoes to class.
No prerequisite or previous experience required. Children aged 15+ are welcome!
This class will run from 10 am - 3 pm with a one hour lunch break between 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Please note that lunch is not provided, but there are restaurants and markets nearby. The studio is located at 5621 Lowell St Oakland CA.
If you are interested in this class but your desired date is no longer listed or is listed as unavailable/sold out due to class popularity, you can request to be on the waitlist for that class here.
